Day nineteen. All is well. Anchorage, Alaska.
Today was a rainy, cool (a high of 60 degrees) day in the Anchorage area, so I did not venture as far from base as I would have liked, however, I did see some of the sites on my list.
The Anchorage Downtown Market (Top Photo) was bustling today, in spite of the rain. Today this downtown market was comprised of local vendors, in a version of a flea market, farmer's market, and local arts and crafts producers at location. There were also vendors selling ethnic foods, local food favorites, and various seafood samplings. I tried something called a Podersky, which was meat-filled sourdough bread. It was advertised as a Russian item. I could not find anything by that name as a Russian food on the internet, but I did find a sweet filled pastry item called Vatrushka.
Anyway . . . before I got it from the vendor I asked that it be cut in half, which was done. I found the taste to be rather bland, and I gave half of it to an older gentleman from a cruise ship with whom I shared a pick nick table. He said he and the family hailed from Ohio. He said he was also curious as to how it taste.
Anchorage is in many ways a modern North American city, with some nice relatively new buildings, and conveniences. But, in some ways it has some of the atmosphere of Key West's Duval Street, with the small shops selling "Alaska souvenirs", many of which still have their "Made in China" stickers in place.
The population of Anchorage is just under 300,000 people, and the greater Anchorage statistical area increases that total to 380,000 people. Transportation, oil and gas, and government services leads the list of driving economic factors and jobs.
Although my traveling and site seeing was limited today it was a good day in that I did get to see some things, and I was also able to rest a bit from the last three days.
Another good day.
